Elsewhere, Hull picked up an impressive three points away to Norwich, while Reading comfortably disposed of Barnsley with a 3-0 win, scoring three times in the final 12 minutes.
The only draw of the weekend came at Turf Moor, where Burnley played out a 0-0 stalemate with Bristol City while Swansea suffered a 3-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest.
Coventry’s bright start took a knock as they lost at home to Preston, but Derby had no such trouble at home as they thrashed Crystal Palace 5-0 at Pride Park.
On Friday, Portsmouth got their first win of the season and in some style as they destroyed Leicester 6-1 at Fratton Park, with Liam Lawrence , Dave Kitson , David Nugent and Michael Brown on the scoresheet.
