Manchester United are preparing their first attempt to try and sign a player using the Cristiano Ronaldo transfer cash. United are reportedly piecing together a bid for Inter Milan striker, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, as they look to bring in a high profile target to replace their former Portuguese play maker.

United have been knocked by a lot of people in the game over the last two weeks or so because of their failure to move in securing the signatures of a lot of influential players who are all moving to Spain. They have just missed out on signing Karim Benzema from Lyon and Franck Ribery of Bayern Munich looks set to follow his fellow Frenchman to Real Madrid.

There is no dancing around the fact that United need a big and high calibre striker, as they are short up front. The arrival of Michael Owen at Old Trafford was nothing more than a stop gap move and they were always going to be linked with a big name player sooner or later. United are going to need a big player that has the ability to change a game instantly and someone that can bring other people into a match just by his presence at the top of the pitch.

Whether Ibrahimovic is the right person for United is highly debatable. Sir Alex Ferguson clearly rates the six-foot plus tall Swede but a lot of pundits would call it a bad move as he rarely turns up in a lot of big games. Furthermore he is well liked by Jose Mourinho who will be incredibly reluctant to let the player leave unless it is in a huge deal.

This is a deal that probably wouldn’t justify the player and United could well be better off looking at other options. The English champions still have a lot of time before the next season starts and they should not panic about trying to find a striker to lead their attack in the coming campaign.

It is easy to see why United may be interested in such a player because he does have a lot going for him. He is tall and very quick on his feet for a player of his height. United will need a big target man up front as they will not now be able to play their slick and aggressive passing football as Ronaldo was so integral to the success of this style of play.

Although a lot of people have called Ibrahimovic quite selfish in the past a move to United and England could end up revitalising his career. The player has already hinted that he wants to move away from the Italian game, which apparently does not suit his style of play and is too slow. He would probably be quite grateful for a move to English football and would therefore be a good signing as United are going to need someone who will sweat blood for the side.

The point is however that a lot of people are supposedly telling Sir Alex Ferguson to steer clear of any bid he is considering making for him. He could get a lot more for his money and the Swedish front man has not really done enough to justify such a huge price tag.

In a football world that is becoming increasingly dominated by cash, Inter are clearly trying to make the most out of a bad situation and United need to keep their business heads on otherwise they could well end up being ripped off.

Ferguson will have a long list of targets and he needs to weigh up how important each one is to his United side. It is important to remember that Ferguson will probably now be considering reinventing his side as he lost two very influential players so far this summer in Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez.

Ferguson has a very good idea of where he wants to take the current side and if Ibrahimovic fits into this philosophy then United will be hard pushed to find someone to match his characteristics. However, they really do need to proceed with caution because the Swede can be very temperamental at times and United will need someone who can raise his level of performance consistently.

Ibrahimovic cannot always do this easily and on a consistent basis and many will say that this, equipped with his slight ego, are the two main reasons why Ferguson should not go any where near the player. It will be interesting to see how the move develops as United could do a lot better.

However, if they do sign one of the top scorers in the Italian leagues then they will have to work very hard in basing the team around him. Ibrahimovic does not strike the ordinary fan as a player that can adapt himself to a team and this will make United’s job a lot harder as they restructure to have another go at European and domestic success.

It is impossible to say at this moment in time whether it would be a gamble that pays off because the move has so many advantages and disadvantages. The money being talked about is a lot of cash in the current climate and United should only spend it if they are absolutely certain that this player is the person to help them move forward.

They may let the move go because the doubts are too big to ignore. Being the top scorer in Italy is totally different to being the top scorer in England where the league is a lot more difficult to play in.

Ibrahimovic is a player that relies on time on the ball and not being pressured in order to make space and bring other players into the side. These are things that he would not get in the Premier League and they are things that mean United may be better off in going for another target. I’m sure with this player that if Real Madrid came in and tried to poach him, United probably wouldn’t be too annoyed.

Sir Alex Ferguson is playing a very shrewd game at Manchester United as we continue to wait for the first big money signing to walk through the door at Old Trafford. Valencia and Owen are deals that have been completed but we all expected these due to the strong speculation surrounding each.

The point is that a lot of United fans are growing frustrated by Ferguson’s reluctance to part with a great deal of cash in order to bring in a high profile star. Well the boss has parted with another £3 million, or is about to, after taking advice from former defender, Laurent Blanc.

Blanc has advised Ferguson to take a gamble on Gabriel Obertan, a winger who currently plays for Marseille. Apparently Blanc has said that Obertan is better than Nani, which has put the future of the Portuguese player at the club in doubt. The point is that it is now seeming more and more likely that Ferguson will go for unproven stars to replace some important players that have just left his club.

Blanc said: “I was surprised too, but it is an unexpected chance for him to play with one of the best clubs in the world. Manchester United have been tracking him for a long time. They certainly hope to advance him, something that Bordeaux and Lorient have failed to do. He has the potential, but he must overcome psychological and mental challenges so he can express his true value.”

It is interesting to see if the move works. This transfer will create a similar effect to the one that surrounded the arrival of Michael Owen at United. There are those that believe Ferguson is playing a very clever game and has done his homework in order to poach a couple of very good players at very cheap prices and can put them on cheap deals.

However, there will be others, and this group will be the larger, that believe Ferguson is starting to lose his marbles. This is the group that cannot understand why Ferguson is not fighting for some of the high profile targets that he clearly liked. They all seem to be going to Real Madrid but United are not doing a thing to try and get them to go to Old Trafford.

It is very important that United do not get carried away with trying to find a formula that will produce the next Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo was a once in a generation sort of player and it would be naïve for the Manchester club to go around snapping up players in the hope that they will progress in a similar vein as the world player of the year did when he was at Old Trafford.

Ferguson is clearly a very shrewd man who possibly thinks that no player is worth a certain amount of money. However, he will have to up his game if he is to carry on competing at the very highest level because it seems that some other clubs are not fussed about morals when it comes to having to pay for a player.

United cannot replace the quality that has left by making such small and unpredictable signings. Sooner rather than later they will have to part with a large amount of cash to make good the influence of the players that have left. If they do not then they will simply get picked apart next season by teams that have a better squad and higher calibre players to spare than themselves.

Ferguson must still have a list of big name players in mind that he would like to make bids for. He has already missed out on Karim Benzema and it looks like Franck Ribery will go for a lot more than United would have been willing to pay. The point is that these are not the only high calibre players that are up for sale and Fergie must be working away on a signing that will shock us all.

If he does not act then he will be conforming to the view of those who feel he is losing it. However, this is unlikely and it could well just be a matter of time until Manchester United’s new star is announced. Clever and shrewd quiet moves are all one thing but they need to be blended with a bit of brashness and ambition in order for the squad to carry on winning trophies.

United seem to be establishing a new and younger squad following the recent departures. Ben Foster has just signed a new contract and the wheels may have been set in motion as Ferguson looks to reinvent himself and the club yet again. There should be no doubts over him because he proves every time that he knows what he is doing and every time he gets it correct.

Plenty of high profile players have left Manchester United in recent years and every time the club goes on to move forward and become better than they were before. However, the task is now more difficult than it has ever been because the players that have left are the most influential that United have had in recent times. You do not replace a midfield player that can score 30 goals in a season and win every personal award going.

United fans should have faith in their manager and should sit tight and hope that he knows exactly what he is doing. Sometimes the club will have to sacrifice a little bit of glory in order to once again solidify and move forwards. There is no better man to do this than Fergie and the imminent arrival of the Frenchman from Marseille could turn out to be a masterstroke. We just all hope that it does not signify the start of a downturn in the career of one of the greatest bosses to have ever graced the game. If all goes as plan then United will be sitting as pretty as any other club by the time the season starts in August.

Bayern Munich have once again insisted that in-demand midfielder Franck Ribery is not for sale at any price.

The Frenchman is one of Europe’s top stars and is reportedly being tracked by top rate clubs Chelsea, Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid, with the latter said to be his preferred destination. Inconsistent reports coming from Germany have led to the biggest transfer saga of the summer, with Real Madrid ready to make yet another substantial offer for one of the world’s best players.

Bayern legend and current club chairman Karl-Heinze Rummenigge has however reiterated that the Bundesliga giants are unwilling to part ways with the 26-year-old. “Franck Ribery is irreplaceable,” he told L’Equipe. “Real Madrid know our position: he is not for sale. “That Franck wants to go to Real is not a surprise. It’s a fascinating club and attractive on a financial level. But Bayern are not a bad club either.

“At our club the doors are solid and very resistant and we’re not going to push up the bidding. The France international joined Bayern from Marseille for €25m in 2007 and has been a revelation in an otherwise disappointing two seasons for the German club, and Rummenigge knows Ribery is key if they are to return to the top of Europe again.

“Ribery figures among the best players of the world. And when you have a player of this quality among the squad you don’t separate. “We want to build around this player who (Bayern coach) Louis van Gaal absolutely wants under his command.”

Meanwhile, striker Luca Toni has revealed he is open to a return to Italy with Inter and AC Milan monitoring his situation. The former Fiorentina poacher has spent two successful seasons in Germany but after netting almost 60 goals in that time the 32-year-old’s future is uncertain.

The arrival of €30m striker Mario Gomez from VfB Stuttgart plus reported interest in Lazio forward Goran Pandev has left the Italian international pondering his future, and he admits Seria A is a likely destination.“I’d like to come back,” he said. “I know there is the crisis that clubs can’t invest so much, but someone looked at me.” “Inter and Milan? There have been talks, but to arrive to a transfer these are not enough.

“I’m not a slave of my salary. Should I not find space at Bayern, I won’t have problems in coming back to Italy also reducing it (his salary). “And it doesn’t seem to me that my season with 18 goals in 35 matches has been so negative.”

Toni was part of Italy’s World Cup winning side of 2006 and remains a part of Marcello Lippi’s set up as they prepare for the defence of their trophy next year, and the 6 ft 5 striker knows he has an important season ahead of him.

“I want to play in the year that will end with the World Cup. I haven’t done a good Confederations Cup, but it hasn’t been nothing better or nothing worse than the others,” he added.

Lyon have accepted that they are close to defeat in their attempts to try and keep star player, Karim Benzema. The young Frenchman is thought to head a shortlist of attacking players that Sir Alex Ferguson will try to buy to make good the loss of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Manchester United would be a good destination for the young man and it should not unsettle him too much in terms of moving to another country. He would be well positioned to be able to go home frequently and the pace of the Premier League could suit him well as he continues his development as a player.

Lyon had insisted that the player would not be going to another club this summer but the club’s president, Jean-Michel Aulas, has now admitted that £35 million would be a hard fee to turn down. United would probably be happy to pay it as well because it is a lot less than they would have to fork out for Franck Ribery of Bayern Munich.





Aulas said: “Karim has said he wants to stay at Lyon but I think Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka also imagined they would be staying with their clubs. There is a tsunami known as Real Madrid sweeping through football which leads to a reaction from Chelsea, City and tomorrow United.”

“I won’t hide the fact he has been approached by other teams – as a consequence, saying that he is non-transferable is tough.”

Benzema has been far and away the most potent of Lyon’s attacking players over the last two seasons, scoring 54 goals in the process of becoming the most feared player in the top-flight of French football. This has meant that he has attracted a lot of interest but the rumours linking him with United have existed for a lot longer than those associating him with any other clubs.

He would also benefit from the fact that Patrice Evra, his international team mate, already plays at United and could easily help him settle in. He would also be more likely to get a starting place at United as opposed to if he joined a top Spanish side. The thought of Benzema and Rooney side by side, destroying defences is a truly terrifying prospect.




It may also be the case that Ferguson wants to go for a player that mirrors how Ronaldo was when he first went to United. Although Benzema would arrive with a higher profile and the statistics to back him up, he would be similar to the Portuguese winger in the respect that he still has the naivety of youth. This could allow the United boss to mould him into a truly terrifying player that could benefit United in a number of other areas.

Lyon now seem resigned to the fact that they will have to sell the player as soon as United come in with a big bid. Benzema would be well advised to ignore the lucrative rival offers that are likely to come his way and think about what would be best for him personally and his career in the game.

Ashley Young is in some extraordinary news today with reports saying that he has demanded Martin O’Neill shows some ambition and forward thinking at the club or he will leave. The Aston Villa star is said to be growing frustrated at the lack of progress the club has made since starting the Premier League in blinding form last season.

Villa have been one of the very few talked about clubs in the transfer market so far and Young wants some ambition to be shown if he is to commit his future to the club. Villa are now an established top six club but the challenge is breaking into the top four and this is something they have got close to doing but have failed on so many occasions.

Villa have already let Gareth Barry leave to go and join Manchester City and with no clear signs of any replacements walking through the door any time soon, Young could make good of the reports that have been saying it is only a matter of time before he joins Harry Redknapp’s Tottenham revolution in London. There are also rumours that Young has been linked to Chelsea who are looking for a high class winger, should they fail in their attempts to sign Franck Ribery of Bayern Munich.

Unless big changes are made quickly then it would be hard for Young and Villa to turn down any lucrative approach from another club. Young would not be worried about leaving the club behind because at current he feels there is little progress being made and that the future of his career may be better served if he moves on to another challenge.

The problem for Martin O’Neill is that he is in a situation where he has to sell before he can buy. If the top clubs in England keep missing out on the players that are joining Real Madrid then they will be forced to look at more realistic domestic options. This could mean that Villa would get a big fee for Young and leave O’Neill with roughly £40 million to spend in reorganising the playing staff.

However, this amount of money will not be as great if Young does stay on and this is the thing that Villa have to weigh up as a club. They need to address how vocal Young is being in his frustration and whether a move would be in the best interests for all of the parties concerned.

It would be remarkable if they did let him go because Young has the ability to put a football onto a ten pence coin and this is the sort of ability that is so priceless in football. He has become one of the deadliest set piece takers of a football and has been knocking on the door of Fabio Capello’s England side for a very long time.

This is the other thing that Young has to consider. If he gets a bigger move, will it mean that his international chances are increased? Doubtless is the fact that he would want to become an international regular and he currently feels that if he stays at Villa then this may not happen.

Bayern Munich have told Chelsea to up the ante if they want to have any chance of signing winger, Franck Ribery. Chelsea have made a bid of £40 million for the player, which is thought to be at least £10 million short of what the German side want for their best player.

The speculation over Ribery’s future has been going on continuously for the last few days and even weeks. Manchester United and Barcelona have also made bids but it is thought that all three sides do not agree with the valuation that has been placed on the Frenchman.

Bayern are playing a very dangerous game because if they carry on rejecting very lucrative offers for Ribery then the clubs involved may grow increasingly tired and just give up on the possibility of reaching a deal. It is clear that the clubs going for him do not value him to the same extent as the £56 million that Real Madrid paid AC Milan for Kaka.

The first official bid was made within the last two days and proves that Ribery will definitely be on his way to another club by the end of the summer. He would probably favour a move to England because of the ease that he could travel back and forth to France but the challenge of a move to Spain would be equally appealing.

Barca appear to be the most likely club to up any bid they have currently made. They are yet to move in the transfer market this summer and they could easily raise a lot of money in order to get their man. However, if they intend to do a Madrid and pay whatever it takes remains to be seen and it would quite refreshing to see some sensible decision making being made from a Spanish club at least on one occasion this month.

Out of the three, United would probably be the least likely to improve any bid they have made. Sir Alex Ferguson has always historically shown that he will bid what he thinks a player is worth and then will not go beyond that point. The English champions also need to improve in other areas so they would not be willing to blow the Ronaldo transfer money all on one player.

There will have to be a compromise somewhere otherwise Munich will be left with a player under contract who clearly wants to move to another club. This could damage the future of Ribery as well as have an effect on the rest of the team. If Ribery is unhappy and just twiddling his thumbs at the club then it will damage the morale of the first team and anger a lot of the coaching staff.

Therefore now that the cat has been well and truly let out of the bag, Ribery will go somewhere. The only problem is that it seems Munich are asking for too much and it could take a long time for a deal to be reached. All of the clubs who have made a bid for him clearly do not think he is worth the amount of money that is being asked for and until two parties can meet in the middle nothing will progress and stories of this nature will continue.

Inter Milan manager, Jose Mourinho, has moved to try and sign Deco and Ricardo Carvalho from his previous club Chelsea. Carvalho is said to be growing frustrated at his inability to get back into Chelsea’s main plans and joins Deco in wanting a move away from West London.

Deco said last week that a move away from Chelsea was a virtual certainty for him and Mourinho still highly rates Carvalho, which could see him fund a double swoop for the pair. It would be a good move for both parties. On the one hand Carlo Ancelotti will want to get rid of the baggage at Stamford Bridge and Mourinho will be getting two players who he believes can help decrease the gap between Inter and the other teams in Europe.

Both of the Chelsea stars would also profit from the fact that the Italian league is slower than the top-flight in England. Both Deco and Carvalho are not in the infancy of their careers any more and it could be a move which sees retirement put off for a little while longer as they adapt to a new league and way of life.

Inter president, Massimo Moratti said: “”[Jose] Mourinho has asked us for Deco and Carvalho and we are working towards making him happy. Our wish is to sign both players and I have seen that the players’ intention is to join us. We still haven’t reached an agreement with Chelsea but I think we will do in a short time.”

“We are interested in Carvalho primarily for the Champions League. He has the right experience, he is calm under pressure and brings experience in the defensive line. Our coach has guaranteed quality and I have every intention to make him happy. Deco will have two tasks: to do well immediately and to help Coutinho mature as a player. Coutinho will arrive next season and plays in the same role as Deco.”

Inter were also reported to be interested in signing Franck Ribery from Bayern Munich, but as the Germans have put such a high price on the Frenchman they will need to sell first. This generated the news that they quoted a massive price for Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Real Madrid and Mouirnho could be forced into smaller signings before taking the massive ones.

The best part of this deal for Inter is the experience they will be getting. A lot of activity is taking place in the transfer market which is threatening to destroy the English dominance of European football. Real Madrid and Inter Milan will be bigger and tougher propositions next season and Mourinho will be working all the time to try and decrease this gap.

Chelsea will benefit by losing two unhappy players but they will struggle to be able to replace the experience and wealth of knowledge that Deco and Carvalho had during their time at Chelsea. Their loss is another clubs gain. However, it was a move that had to happen and everyone seems satisfied.

Who next at Manchester United? That’s the question on everyone’s lips as the final touches are put to Cristiano Ronaldo’s record-breaking 80 million pound move to Real Madrid. And, according to the Old Trafford owners, there’s going to be absolutely no problem with finance whatsoever. Lucky Sir Alex Ferguson can do what he wants for the good of the team and the club and has total control. Hang on. Let’s rewind a second. This statement made on behalf of the Glazier family was in relation to the Ronaldo deal.
First of all, as we all suspected, negotiations for the Brazilian star started last season when a pre-contract was already made. Not much of a surprise there. Secondly, Sir Alex Ferguson was not forced to sell him. Ronaldo wanted to go to Real Madrid and Sir Alex raised no objections. Ronaldo had given six good years to the club and it was time to let him go.

Money or debts had absolutely nothing to do with the decision, a spokesman is stressing. “The idea that Manchester United is motivated by a debt burden is not true. It’s not an issue,” said the spokesman. “Ronaldo decided after six years that it was time to move on and the manager said okay. Sir Alex is in total control of his squad. He is empowered to make whatever decisions he thinks are in the best interests of Manchester United.”

Now, there’s no doubt these words are true – when it comes to selling a player. Even more so when there is a fee of 80 million pounds involved. Sir Alex Ferguson is a shrewd man and he probably realised there was absolutely no point in battling this one out. But when it comes to buying in new players, is he really going to be in charge? The next few weeks will tell.

All eyes will be on who Manchester United are eyeing up and, by all accounts, Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery is top of their list. The asking price? Around 90 million pounds which would once again smash the world record of the Ronaldo deal, which smashed the world record of Kaka, which smashed the world record of Zidane and so on.

Apart from the big question of where it’s all going to stop, it will be interesting to see how much “control of his squad” Sir Alex Ferguson really does have. With 80 million pounds back into the Manchester United coffers, just how much will the American owners really be willing to spend?

Franck Ribery is likely to be a player just too far and with Real Madrid’s desire to build a team of greats, they might well throw their name into the hat too. What Manchester United fans can expect, however, is a few other acquisitions. Samuel Eto’o is being tipped to replace Ronaldo in a move away from Barcelona and it’s pretty certain that Wigan winger Antonio Valencia will be secured shortly following several earlier cash bids being put on the table. A fee of 16 million pounds for the Ecuador striker seems much more reasonable than the 90 million pounds for Ribery, no matter what his undoubted talents.

It’s quite likely that Sir Alex Ferguson won’t go for Ribery in any event if that is how much he is going to cost. Manchester United want to build a good team but perhaps have their feet more firmly on the ground than Real Madrid who are entering into the world of fantasy football. Star players usually have a star ego and one wrong purchase can split a squad, not make it, not to mention breaking the bank.

Well done Arsene Wenger for resisting the temptation of Real Madrid.
President Florentino Perez has revealed what most people in football already suspected. He wanted Wenger as manager before finally appointing Manuel Pellegrini.

Wenger had previously admitted that taking charge of Real would be “an interesting project”. However, despite undoubtedly being a man of honour, his reluctance to expand further on the conversations between himself and Perez fuelled fears amongst the Gunners fans that he might just be tempted away.

Wenger has always pledged his loyalty to Arsenal and this has now been confirmed. Admittedly, there had obviously been a lot of talks in secret as Wenger and Perez had met on three separate occasions. The Real Madrid president is used to getting his own way and he must have been extremely frustrated not to land the deal. But credit to Perez too for speaking out on behalf of Wenger who told him he was just too dedicated to his cause at Arsenal to leave. There would have undoubtedly been a lot of money on the table and lots of perks with the job, not to mention the prestige, and Wenger hasn’t exactly been immune from criticism at Arsenal.

It’s some years since the Gunner took home any silverware and though fourth this last season in the Premiership isn’t bad going, fans believe it is time Wenger and the players delivered more. Though they missed out on Wenger, Real Madrid are very much in the market for some new multi-million pound signings. They are being tipped to beat Chelsea for French midfielder Franck Ribery for a reported 60 million pounds and to deny Liverpool of Valencia’s midfielder David Silva.

But it is looking odds on that a seemingly unhappy Cristiano Ronaldo will be going to AC Milan should he decide to leave Manchester United. Ronaldo looked a very unhappy man following the Champions League defeat by Barcelona and walked off the pitch like a petulant schoolboy. Afterwards, he refused to discuss his future at Manchester United, saying he needed to go on holiday and think things through. It’s highly unlikely that Ronald will be with the Red Devils next season but it’s going to be an interesting time watching the Spanish teams fight over him.

Meantime, the funniest story of the week concerning Arsenal has to be Theo Walcott’s admission that he grew a moustache and designer beard to stop his fellow players calling him Sweet Little Boy! Such is the humour Arsene Wenger would have missed had he joined Real Madrid! No one is doubting that Wenger is a brilliant manager and a great technician, not to mention a perfect ambassador for the game of football. Real Madrid’s interest just backs up the case. Now, Wenger has to convince himself that staying with Arsenal was the right decision and only greater success on the pitch will validate it.

Chelsea and Manchester United look to have missed out on the chance of attracting Franck Ribery to England as reports are suggesting this morning that a £40 million deal has been lined up with Spanish giants, Real Madrid.

Madrid are thought to be considering offering a vast amount more than that in order to get their man and it could be the deciding factor that makes Bayern Munich allow the Frenchman to go elsewhere.

Ribery had been strongly linked with a move to United earlier in the season and was thought to prefer the fast paced and physical side of the Premier League to the more technical side of La Liga. However, in football money talks and neither Chelsea nor United would be willing to pay such a high amount for a player they don’t consider worth it.

It is also further evidence that Madrid’s president elect, Florentino Perez, is willing to throw Madrid’s finances up in the air in order to secure his own position and bring a number of high profile players to the club. If Ribery does go to Spain then it probably won’t be the first big singing they make of the summer as Perez has promised a whole list of names that he must deliver on.

For United the news may actually be greeted in a positive fashion. Ribery was touted as Madrid’s alternative to Crsitiano Ronaldo earlier in the season and Sir Alex Ferguson will hope that the reports mean that Madrid are giving up their interest in the Portuguese winger.

It is important to remember though that Perez is a very eccentric and flamboyant individual and no doubt he will keep the rumour mill turning until he has satisfied his own personal gains. It wouldn’t be a surprise at all if he engineered a bid for Ronaldo, but United would rather let their star player fall out with the club and rot in the stands than sell him to another team.

The news will also be a big dent to the ambitions of the potential new Chelsea boss, Carlo Ancelotti.
